Agriculture in Africa

As Africa’s population grows from 1.2 billion to an estimated 2 billion by 2050, food security is one of the most important global issues. Sub-Saharan Africa currently has the world’s lowest cereal yields and it is reported that a quarter of the population is undernourished and many countries experience famines. In Nigeria, agricultural holdings are generally small and scattered; farming is often of the subsistence variety, characterized by simple tools and shifting cultivation.

The major challenges faced by many farmers in Africa are in the areas of financing, operation and management, training, infrastructural issues, distribution, logistics and marketing. In Nigeria, for instance energy costs constitutes approximately 40% of production costs. Approximately 1.3 billion tons of food produced for human consumption is being wasted globally. In Africa food is wasted throughout the supply chain due to inadequate, financing, managerial and technical limitations in harvesting techniques, lack of storage and cooling facilities, infrastructure, packaging and marketing systems.

The Opportunity

In line with focus on Nigeria’s economic transformation our aim is to be a World Class exporter of a large scale raw materials and processed products from the West African region to higher value markets.

The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) is the agricultural component of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), within the region and is Africa’s policy framework for agricultural transformation, wealth creation, food security and nutrition, economic growth and prosperity for all. In Maputo, Mozambique in 2003, the African Union (AU) Summit made the first declaration on CAADP as an integral part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). Although continental in scope, CAADP only comes to life through integrated national and regional efforts to promote agricultural sector growth and economic development.

In an attempt to put in place regional agricultural policies to accelerate the drive for food security the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of States in 2005 adopted the ECOWAS Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP), as an instrument for the coordination of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP). This policy has a vision of “a modern and sustainable agriculture, based on the effectiveness and efficiency of family farms and the promotion of agricultural enterprises through the involvement of the private sector. Productive and competitive in the intra-Community and International markets, it must ensure food security and remunerative incomes to its workers”.

Needless to say Nigeria is endowed with an abundance of natural resources yet to be fully exploited and its Government is fully committed to commercial farming.

Supporting Innovation

Innovative agriculture techniques have changed the whole agricultural process with the facilities of modern agricultural equipment and technology used mainly in industrialized nations.

We provide farmers/producers with useful information on modern agriculture methods, technologically advanced equipment and energy subsidies that have revolutionized the whole agricultural process i.e miracle seeds, pesticides, irrigation, crop dusters, CAT tractors, solar powered crop dryers, continuous release granular fertilizer, ammonium nitrate and synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. By providing farmers with the skill and knowledge to build successful farms they maximize production output, prevent spoilage, lower operations cost and get higher value.

In addition, we advise large scale manufacturers to the highest quality standards in order to ensure that finished goods produced for export are not only safe but meet World Health Organization (WHO), application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (the SPS Agreement) entered into with the establishment of the World Trade Organization and International standard setting organizations.
